Snapback Madness

I have been watching this Snapback craze percolating for 3-4 years now. First it was the boutiques in Soho, then the small hat shops, now its full blown across the country in every segment of retail. The retro feel of Snapbacks is bringing die hard hat collectors out of every corner. The hats are selling at near record rates for baseball caps.

NCAA, NHL, Brands, it is firing hot in every category. We at Zephyr have 10 Major snapback programs under way this year alone. The hats are selling out within days of hitting the shelves. Zephyr's ability to create these show stopping styles is partly because Zephyr was incubated during the time when these styles were hot. I owned stores in the 80's that sold these very styles. I have great memories of these styles and as a result have been able to steer our designs to be relavant to that time period. These styles were part of what made me want to start a hat company in the first place.

The best thing about the snapback craze though is that it establishes the style as a permanent authentic piece. Now in addition to Fitted hats, the snapback has made its place in the product lines that retailers will be tapping into for years to come. It is authentic, old school, but also the ultimate style for retailers who are nervous about carrying all the sizes of a fitted hat. It is fun to be a part of and Zephyr will make sure that its snapbacks continue to rise above all others both in authenticity and quality.

The Fallout ZDL collection

Not all ZDL limited edition fitteds are in pop colors. Here are examples of a new style that is in stock right now that incorporates two different winter color themes. Zephyr currently makes its hats in dedicated factories in China and Bangladesh.

Merchandising Matters

The difference between when a product sells and when it doesnt has a lot to do with presenting the product.

A big problem with many hat walls is that they have way too many styles, teams, and companies represented in a random way. This causes confusion for customers as they cant focus on what is new and relevant to them. The smart retailers buy less styles but present them better and back them up with inventory to insure their success.

Picking the right style is very important. The more thought and research that goes into connecting with the end customer the more successful stores will be in buying ther right styles.

When product is merchandised correctly the customer appreciates it and the retailer can get a higher price.

The pictures presented here are those of the Arena collection at the Denver Nuggets Pepsi Center stores. The arena collection display has a boutique type feel. The hats are organized correctly, have smart looking arena collection Point of Purchase displays, and each hat has the exclusive arena collection sticker on the bill. These styles will change as they sell through at Nuggets games. Each style though will continue to flow through and be merchandized in the exact same way.

If a retailer's college or NHL hockey wall is a mess it is time to unload old styles and recommit to standing behind fewer styles and presenting them better. In almost every case the retailers sales will grow.

One of the most exciting initiatives that Zephyr is undertaking right now is the Zephyr Design Lab series generally known as the ZDL series. The ZDL are hats that are not designed and brought in to fulfill a retailers order or need but rather are based entirely on consumer input and/or focus groups.

These products are low runs, limited edition hats that are brought into stock without any prior notice and are available to retailers literally on a first come first basis.

These hats are based on input from consumers from all demographics and parts of the country. Often times they are new colorways or desisgned to hook up with kicks or hoodys. Other times they are meant to fulfill a niche that consumers have identified that are not being met by current product lines. Also, at times they are just experiments to see if something will sell. These hats generally have a few extra whistles and bells and will cost a bit more.

The ZDL is really gaining attention and should be a fun and informative addition to the hat business.

Flat bill or Curve bill?

It depends on your generation. In our latest high school focus groups flat bills were preferred in urban areas 98% of the time. in suburban areas flat bills were preferred 72-92%. From our experience the generation switch we have found is right around 22-23 years old. the curve bill generation is older and the flat bills younger. Like any fashion this is constantly in flux and there are certainly exceptions.

Once you get past the bill almost everyone agree that true fitted hats are preferred over stretch fitted hats.

Reality show visits Zephyr

A new reality show pilot featured Zephyr recently as 2 very hot New York artists were flown to Colorado and were given 24 hours to develop an urban lineup.

They worked all night and pulled off some great styles featuring college and NHL logos. Upon completion they were introduced to the Colorado mountains which made for some great video.

Episode two of the series will be filmed at Magic in Las Vegas as they unveil their product to key retailers.
If all goes as planned the so far unnanounced show will air this fall.

Team colors vs hookups

Some fans show their true team colors no matter what season it is. Some fans wear their colors no matter where they are. Now, more than ever though, hat buyers are being motivated by colors and what hooks up to thier new shirt or kicks. Many retailers have slowly changed from carrying every team in one or two team colors to a few teams in many colors.

Presentation for retailers is half the battle and using multiple colors of the same team makes for a great presentation. Many hat buyers just dont care what the team is as long as the hat looks cool and fits right.

For die hard fans however there are limits. Don't expect to see a Michigan fan wearing a dark green Michigan hat. Not only is that almost sacriligious for fans to wear their school marks in their arch rivals colors, it is also banned by many of the schools licensing departments as well.

Zephyr and the College World Series

The college world series was again a huge success as Zephyr continued its domination in the college fitted business. Key retailers such as Pro Image, Lids, and JEB enterprises had record sales and the vast majority of the sales were in the flat bill Fitted category.

With each passing day it looks more and more like the hat buyers are moving away from stretch fitted hats and back to the authentic pro fitted.

Custom made hats and CWS theme hats also sold very well. Zephyr has had a long tradition since its beginnings in 1993 of doing well at this event and the success is primarily because of partnerships with smart and savvy retailers, careful inventory management by the Zephyr sales team, and quick production at our factory. We look forward to continuing this great partnership and expanding this model more completely to other events as well.

Some hats like the Live Mechanics hat shown here seem to appeal to almost every hat culture. This satin pinstriped hat with tonal logos has been very popular in focus groups in places like Harlem as well as in the Suburbs in the West USA. If the cities are going more basic and retro and the burbs are still into wild styles and patterns this seems to be the meeting place. This hat is done in many pop colors including lime green, orange, yellow, and red. This hat is as sharp looking on the inside as it is on the outside with intricate patterns on a separate satin lining inside. Some times when designing hats you need to stay very close to the market but other times doing something completely different can be a game changer and in more markets than you would expect.

NHL Sales are Cranking

Zephyr's NHL business is booming this season. Despite retail king Hatworld/Lids not buying as much as usual the rest of Zephyrs USA account base are really turning the NHL hats.

Zephyr NHL Sales in Canada and Europe are also up significantly. In Europe, Finland is still tops followed by Austria, Russia, and the rest. In Europe countries tend to support their local heros and the teams they are on. For instance when Forsberg and Sundin were the top names all Sweden wanted was the AVs and the Leafs. Now the Red Wings are more popular there because of the slew of swedes that lineup for the Stanley Cup Champs.

Zephyrs styles seem to be dead on as well. All the in stock and program styles are turning quickly. The Team speed performance hat and flat billed Threat (shown) are leading in popularity. To see the entire NHL stock lineup try the NHL store at NHL.com or go to Hatmonster.com.

What explains this surge of NHL sales compared to a relatively flat college business? No clear reason. However there is some great buzz about the Winter Classic game this year at Wrigley field in Chicago as well as the NHL All Star game being in Montreal, Canada. Whatever the reasons the arenas and retailers both are having a great holiday season.

Who buys hats?

Zephyr's strength has always been making hats for the teen demographic. Our research has shown that 74% of hats sold in the United States are sold to kids between the ages of 14 and 19 years old. Almost 91% are sold to those aged between 14 and 24. Zephyr's brand is strongest in the 14-17 ages.

Zephyr traditional mascot, and heavily embroidered caps have always been a hit with this group. The Xlines are a classic example of Zephyr success to this demographic. While zephyr has always made other styles such as Washed relaxed cotton hats with adjustable closures Zephyr has never been thought of as the prominent cap in this category. In the past 2 years zephyr has made huge leaps in this category both in the bookstore market and the general retail market but this style is still not what kids think of when they think of zephyr hats.

Zephyr sells probably 9 fitted structured hats to every 1 washed adjustable hat. This trend doesn't seem to be changing either. Recently Abercrombie announced very poor holiday sales compared to the previous years. Abercrombie's hats which have always been washed and fitted seem to be slower than ever. Kids definetly while never completely on board in this category are definitely less than ever into it. Kudos to one of our competitors TWINS enterprise who makes great washed hats and have somehow managed to at least stay relevant in this category for years.

If I wasn't wearing a Zephyr hat I would wear a Twins washed hat over any New Era or any other company. Of course I also am 46 years old!

It will be interesting to see how the flat bill vs curve bill trend goes as well as the fitted vs stretch fitted in the next few years. Our growing Urban business partners are really backing off some of the crazy flat billed stuff and getting back to basic colors and designs. There also is great interest in our proprietary Flexbend technology which enables the wearer to change the shape of his bill to his liking. More on that in another post...

While there are dozens of sites offering college hats of every brand and price range there are only a few that are really dedicated to carrying every team possible and in servicing the customer in a big way.
